Aviation statistics at Katowice Airport and other airports were negatively affected by the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. During the first three months of 2020, Katowice Airport handled 651 854 passengers, i.e. 60 532 fewer (-8.5%) than in 2019. The airport saw in the meantime 7 065 aircraft operations (departures and landings), a number bigger by 192 (+2.8%) than last year. During the first quarter of the present year, 4 865 tonnes of freight were transported to or from Katowice Airport. The statistic is worse than that in 2019 by 47 tonnes.

The first two months of 2020 must be acknowledged as successful. In January, Katowice Airport handled 290 338 passengers, i.e. 55 466 more (+23.6%) than in the last year. 229 137 passengers – exactly 43 035 more (+23.1%) than in 2019 – took advantage of regular connections. In the area of charter flights, 46 834 people were handled at Katowice Airport. In comparison with the last year, the statistic was worse by 1 559 (-3.2%). In general, during the first month of 2020, Katowice Airport handled 2 868 aircraft operations, i.e. 718 more (+33.4%) than in 2019.

That being said, February was also successful. 264 895 passengers were handled; in comparison with the same month in 2019, the score improved by 37 562 passengers (+16.5%). 218 542 individuals flew on regular flights, thus improving the last year's result by 38 650 (+21.5%). 45 777 people took advantage of charter flights; in comparison with 2019, the number was worse by 699 (-1.5%). During the second month of 2020, Katowice Airport handled 2 608 aircraft operations. The result was better by 477 (+22.4%) in comparison with the same month in 2019.

As a result of the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic and flight suspension, the latter of which is in force in Poland since March 15, the third month of 2020 was worse than the two preceeding ones. March saw 96 621 passengers being handled, i.e. 153 560 fewer (-61.4%) than last year. 78 400 passengers – 124 644 less (-61.4%) – flew on regular flights, and 18 026 travellers took advantage of charter connections; the latter result was worse by 27 957 (-61%) in comparison with 2019. Generally, Katowice Airport handled 1 589 aircraft operations in March. In comparison with the same time period in the last year, there were 1 003 operations fewer (-38.7%).
