10 years of the new runway at Katowice Airport
41M passenggers, 270K tonnes of freight, 370K takeoffs and landings
Ten years ago, i.e. on 28 May 2015, one of the longest runways in Poland (length: 3 200 m, width: 45 m) was put into service at Katowice Airport.
The investment was realized quite quickly. In 2008, the Board of The Upper Silesian Aviation Group (Górnośląskie Towarzystwo Lotnicze S.A.), led by President of the Board Artur Tomasik, decided to carry out the investment. During seven years, the manager of KTW successfully carried out the project, beginning from preparation of the financial structure, choosing a designer and contractor through a tender, reception of all required approvals, construction works, acceptance procedures, and concluding with a complex, yet successful transfer of air traffic from the old runway (length: 2 800 m) to the new one.
The construction of the new runway cost PLN 157M net, PLN 73M of which GTL S.A. received in the form of a grant from the European Union Cohesion Fund (Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment).
Since putting the new runway into service at the end of May 2025, airlines carried over 41M passengers on routes to/from KTW; over 270K tonnes of freight were noted on board of freighters flying to/from KTW. During ten years, 370K landings and takeoffs were noted on the new runway.
