2009-11-09The launch of cargo flights to Canada

The 8th of November this year, saw the launch of the first transatlantic all-cargo connection in the history of Polish aviation. Flights between Hamilton International Airport (85km from Toronto) and Katowice Airport in Pyrzowice will take place once a week and will be operated by a Boeing 767-200 Freighter aircraft. This connection is a joint venture between LOT Polish Airlines and Canadian operator, Cargojet.

The direct cargo connection from Poland was developed in anticipation of the expectations of many of our clients - Mariusz Kuczek, Director of the Post and Cargo Office for LOT Polish Airlines, at a press conference on the day of the inaugural cargo flight - This connection provides an opportunity to increase the competitiveness of Polish freight forwarding companies as well as those exporting goods to North America.

Artur Tomasik, the President of the Upper Silesian Aviation Group's (GTL) Board of Management, the company managing Katowice Airport in Pyrzowice, commenting the launch of the new cargo connection stated:
For GTL, the company managing Katowice Airport, the launch of the transatlantic Hamilton-Katowice-Hamilton route is an incredibly significant event. First and foremost, it serves as confirmation of the huge potential in the development of this segment of the aviation market - and our handling company is in the perfect position to service cargo airliners. We are, already now, second in Poland in terms of cargo traffic. Last year, cargo aircraft transported 12 703 tonnes of freight to and from Katowice Airport. Secondly, this connection fits perfectly into our airport's development strategy. It's worth noting that Katowice Airport services the most industrialised region in Poland. Furthermore, aircraft are able to operate from the airport 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As a result, we are already putting plans in action which will result in Katowice Airport being one of the key cargo airports in this part of Europe, within the next decade. We also plan to complete a series of investments, which will allow freight airlines comfortable and swift access to services at Katowice Airport. The most important project now, is the construction of the new runway, new aprons and the new cargo base. Most of these investments will be completed by the end of 2015.
