2009-09-29Rail connection to Katowice Airport getting closer

At the headquarters of PKP Polish Railways in Warsaw, an agreement was signed today regarding the preparation of pre-project and project documentation regarding "The building of a rail connection from Katowice Airport in Pyrzowice, to the cities within the Upper Silesian agglomeration, Katowice-Pyrzowice section". This task is listed as an individual keyproject within the Eurpean Union's Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment for 2007-2013. The project will be executed by a consortium including: Pöyry Infra GmbH (Germany) - the leader of the consortium, together with Pöyry Infra Sp. z o.o. (Poland - Kraków) and DB International GmbH (Germany). The project is valued at 52 018 200 PLN (net), with an estimated 44.2mln PLN coming from the Cohesion Fund. The agreement was signed by: Johannes Dölzlmüller - President of the Management Board of Pöyry Infra Gmbh, Józef Checinski - President of the Management Board of Pöyry Infra Sp z o.o., Michael Kortüm - DB Internatinal Gmbh Northern Europe Regional Director and representing Polish Railways - Vice President of the Management Board, Marek Pawlik and member of the Board, Zbigniew Zarychta. The signing was attended by many noted people including: Members of Parliament - Jerzy Polaczek and Jacek Brzezinka, Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship, Bogusław Śmigielski, Vice Presidents: Katowice - Arkadiusz Godlewski, Bytom - Marian Maciejczyk and Chorzów - Marian Salwiczyk, Andrzej Kopiński representing the Piekary Śląskie City Council and Artur Tomasik, President of the Upper Silesian Aviation Group, which manages Katowice Airport in Pyrzowice.
The planned rail route linking the centre of the Upper Silesian agglomeration with Katowice Airport in Pyrzowice will be 38km long and include 6 stops: Katowice Załęże, Chorzów Batory, Chorzów ul.3-go Maja, Bytom Rozbark, Piekary Śląskie i Pyrzowice Lotnisko. The link is planned to be completed no later than the 22nd May, 2011.
