2010-01-042009 - a summary

In this past year, 2 364 613 passengers used Katowice Airport in Pyrzowice, which was 2.5% less than in 2008. In terms of charter traffic, with 603 765 passengers (a similar level to 2008) the airport strengthened its position as the Charter Centre for Southern Poland. In 2009, 26 206 aircraft operations took place at Katowice Airport. Wizz Air opening the first, and still the only, regular connection to Ukraine from a regional airport in Poland, was one of the most important events at Katowice Airport in 2009. Apart from Kiev, Katowice Airport's network was expanded by flights to Bologna (Ryanair) and Venice/Treviso and Munich/Memmingen, both of which are operated by Wizz Air. Katowice Airport's network of charter connections also expanded in 2009 - to destinations such as Fuerteventura. Another significant event for Katowice Airport in 2009 was the launch of the first all-cargo transatlantic connection in the history of Polish aviation. Flights between Hamilton Airport in Canada and Katowice Airport were launched by Cargojet and LOT Polish Airlines Cargo. In the past year Katowice Airport also gained recognition by both the industry and passengers alike. The airport was voted the "2009 Passenger-friendly airport" by users of the industry website, Katowice Airport also received the "Awionetka 2009" (Best airport in Poland) award. Furthermore, the Upper Silesian Aviation Group, which manages Katowice Airport, was awarded the Gold Statuette of Leaders in Polish Business.
