2011-04-04March statistics and 2011 first-quarter summary

The political in Egypt and Tunisia had a significant influence on the tourism market, and also, therefore, passenger air transport. In the first quarter of 2011, about 80 planned charter flights failed to depart only from Katowice Airport in Pyrzowice. This translates into approximately 20 000 passengers. The situation on the routes to Egypt and Tunisia is slowly rebuilding - this is evident in the growing number of flights on these routes. In addition, in April, the charter-flight offer from Katowice Airport will include new destinations to Turkey (Antalya, Dalaman), Greece (Saloniki, Rhodes, Crete, Zakynthos), Egypt (Marsa El Alam) and the Canary Islands (Tenerife) as well as a new long-haul charter connection to Dubai.
In the first quarter of 2011, Katowice Airport handled 405 549 passengers, that's 1.2% fewer passengers than in the same time period last year. March saw 142 101 passengers use the airport. Despite the temporary fall in passenger volume connected with the cancellation of flights to Egypt, it is forecast that about 800 000 charter passengers will use Katowice Airport in 2011, which is 100 000 more than in 2010, bringing to total volume to over 2.5 million passengers.
