Once the centre of the Polish mining and metallurgy industries, the Silesian Voivodeship is today one of the most rapidly developing centres of advanced technologies. Numerous production centres for leading enterprises have been established here, including car factories of Italian Fiat and German Opel.
Owing to the well-developed higher education system, including such great institutions as the University of Silesia in Katowice, the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, the University of Economics in Katowice and the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, the Silesian Voivodeship is able to provide qualified professionals to meet the needs of the intensively developing industry.
The Silesian Voivodeship has one of the densest and most well-developed road networks in Poland. The numerous highways, the A4 motorway and the Drogowa Trasa Średnicowa bypass, pass through the centre of the agglomeration, offering rapid and efficient transport within the region.
The Silesian Voivodeship has more to offer than rapidly growing advanced technological industry; it can be proud of its natural environment that includes the Beskid Mountains and the Kraków-Częstochowa Highlands, a magnificent range of a European class. These are places for recreation and relaxation for local people and the increasing numbers of visitors from the rest of Poland and abroad who wish to spend their time in these superb natural surroundings.
The history of the region is extremely rich due to the influences of the Czech, Polish, German, Austrian and Russian peoples who have lived here, resulting in many interesting historic traces around the area. For example, you may visit the historic town of Pszczyna with its beautiful park, the castellated manor in Promnice, the magnificent Old Town in Tarnowskie Góry, the Jasna Góra monastery in Częstochowa, and the castles of the Eagle's Nest Trail in the Kraków-Częstochowa Highland. Here you may also discover traces of the stormy and violent industrial past of the region, with its many historic mines and steelworks. The most interesting buildings can be found on the Technological Monuments Trail. The Silesian Voivodeship is a place where the past and the present live side by side, a place that provides work and education at the highest European levels, and yet is also a place that invites you to visit on business or for pleasure. We invite you to discover the Silesian Voivodeship, and let the International Airport Katowice in Pyrzowice be your gateway.
