2017-08-17Information on the ban on the import of food of animal origin by travellers, in personal luggage

Due to the risk of introduction of diseases into the European Union, strict procedures exist for the admission of certain products of animal origin into the EU. These procedures do not apply to the carriage of products of animal origin between the 28 EU Member States or to products originating from Andorra, Liechtenstein, Norway, San Marino and Switzerland.

The import into the European Union of the following items, in personal luggage, for personal consumption is forbidden:

  • meat and meat products (meat, cold cuts, animal fat, sausages, cured meats, pastry stuffed with meat or containing meat, pasta (if containing meat or milk), sauces, soups,
  • milk and milk products (milk, yoghurt, cream, curd, kefir, cheese, butter, condensed milk, ice cream,
  • pet foods containing meat or milk (pet food, chew toys for pets).

A detailed list of prohibited goods and exemptions is contained in Annexes I and II to Commission Regulation (EC) No 206/2009.

Failure to report such products may result in a fine or criminal prosecution.
