2007-07-06Opening of Terminal B

On July 9th, 2007, the arrivals section and the publicly accessible area of Terminal B at the Katowice International Airport in Pyrzowice managed by Górnośląskie Towarzystwo Lotnicze S.A. are going to be opened. The departures section will start operating between July and August. The new terminal was built according to the requirements of the Schengen Implementation Convention. The cost of the investment was 80 million PLN. As a result of the investment, the floor space of the airport increased from 7600 to 21300 m2, making it possible for up to 3.6 million passengers to depart annually in a comfortable manner. The total number of luggage and ticket check-in counters increased from 17 to 35. The hourly maximum capacity of the airport also rose, from 625 to 1170 passengers. The new terminal also has the longest spectators' terrace in Poland, with a length of 180 metres.
There are numerous food and beverage facilities, as well as shops. The food and beverage facilities in the publicly accessible area of Terminal B include Voyage Ice Cafe, Biznes Shark and a restaurant. There is also a café on the spectators' terrace. The commercial facilities in the publicly accessible zone include a Relay newsstand, a pharmacy, as well as Virgin and Discovery stores. Once the departures section starts operating, there will be a duty free zone with two Baltona shops, a Relay newsstand and two food and beverage facilities: Voyage Cafe and Flying Bistro. On the whole, six food and beverage facilities and five commercial ones will be opened in the new terminal.
A new, passenger-friendly visual information system was installed at Terminal B, as well as a new, extended Passenger Electronic Visual Information system. The latter includes two large dimension LCD panels. There are also monitors over the check-in counters and in all the zones of the terminal where passengers may enter. The total number of all the information displays in the new passenger terminal amounts to 63.
The building that was put in operation is fully adapted to the needs of the disabled. Five passenger lifts were installed, making it possible to reach each of the three levels of the building, both in the publicly accessible and in the duty free area. With Terminal B put in operation, Katowice International Airport ranks as the first Polish regional airport as far as the dimensions of terminals are concerned. In the last 6 months, more than 800 thousand passengers departed from Katowice International Airport, i.e. 200 thousand more compared to the whole of 2004. By the end of the year, about 2 million passengers will have departed from the airport. As passenger traffic is constantly growing, the new terminal will ensure a high level of comfort to departing passengers in the coming years.
Terminal B, whose erection has been completed at Katowice International Airport, is one of the many investments that had been planned and carried out. In order to meet the requirements posed by airlines, works are going to commence in a few weeks' time to enlarge the apron.
